Sliding Mirrored Closet Doors: Layout and Safety Planning

Editorial note: this guide is general planning information. Confirm measurements, specifications, quotation scope, installation and warranty terms in writing before production.

Sliding mirrored closet doors combine wardrobe access with a reflective surface. Plan them around the usable opening, the position of internal drawers, the mirror construction and the complete track system. A full-height mirror may change what the room reflects, but it does not increase the space available for clothes, furniture or panel movement.

Check wardrobe access before choosing the mirror layout

Draw the doors closed and then draw each useful open position. On an overlapping sliding system, part of the wardrobe remains behind another panel. Check whether a drawer, pull-out basket or trouser rack can extend through the opening without touching a door edge or handle. A door layout that looks balanced when closed may be awkward when accessing everyday storage.

Also review the view in the mirror from the bed, doorway and dressing position. Note strong daylight, visible clutter and the position of lamps. Use a sample or temporary layout to judge the intended reflection rather than assuming that more mirror will suit every room.

Decisions to put in the specification

Mirrored wardrobe door planning checks
Decision What the drawing should show
Mirror coverage Full mirror, selected mirror panels or a combination with opaque panels.
Access opening The usable gap in each open position, matched to internal drawers and shelves.
Panel and track system Complete panel weight, supported hardware configuration and adjustment access.
Edges and handles Protected edges, handle projection, overlap and clearance from adjacent furniture.

Ask what the mirror panel actually contains

Do not specify a wardrobe door simply as “mirror glass.” Ask for the mirror product, thickness, backing, frame or edge arrangement, and the installation method accepted by the panel and hardware suppliers. Confirm which components support the panel and which components only guide its movement.

Pilkington Optimirror Protect illustrates a mirror with a factory-applied backing designed to retain fragments after breakage. That example does not establish the construction or safety classification of a different mirror, an added film or a complete wardrobe installation. Obtain documentation for the actual assembly.

Measurement and handover checklist

  • Record finished opening widths and heights at several locations, plus floor and side-wall conditions.
  • Mark sockets, skirting, ceiling features and the space needed to remove or service a panel.
  • Show every internal drawer and pull-out in its fully extended position.
  • Identify who confirms final dimensions, panel weight and fixing conditions before manufacture.
  • At handover, check smooth travel, stops, guides, handle clearance and access to adjustment points.

Agree a cleaning method for the selected mirror and its edges. AGC’s Mirox installation guide is a product-specific reference; follow the instructions for the mirror actually supplied rather than transferring another product’s cleaning or bonding method.

Frequently asked questions

Can an existing wardrobe take mirrored sliding doors?

Possibly, but the opening alone is not enough to decide. The survey should check the supporting structure, track position, panel weight and access to the existing storage. Ask whether retaining the carcass creates any restrictions.

Does safety backing make every mirror door compliant?

No. Backing is one part of a specified product. The complete panel, support and intended application still need review. Guardian’s safety-glass overview explains why glass construction and breakage behaviour matter; it is not certification of a Forge installation.

What should I send with an enquiry?

Send opening photos, approximate dimensions, the wardrobe interior layout, preferred mirror coverage and the project location. Use the measurement planning page to prepare, then request a written review through Forge’s project enquiry page. Final sizes and supply scope must be confirmed for the particular order.
